The «Cash For Clunkers» program is no different. This program, to me, was a loser for all concerned from the start. I will give a few reasons that I feel it was a loser.
Most of the large junkyards use a system called a «Hotline.» If you call a junkyard and ask whether they carry a certain part, they’ll check their inventory database while you’re on the phone. If they don’t find the part you need in their inventory, they can use their Hotline to quickly check the inventories of neighboring junkyards. A quick tip about the Hotline: ask the junkyard that is checking other yards what that particular part would have cost if they had it in their inventory. You may be able to negotiate the price with the other dealer.
Part of the problem is that the car is basically no longer worth anything. And that’s one of those funny things about buying junk cars; the person selling it, tries to build value in it, even though it’s going straight to the scrap yard. When the car gets purchased for scrap, it’s by the pound a certain amount… so it doesn’t matter if the «interior’s in great shape» or you «just put new brake pads on it,» that’s all VERY irrelevant!
Small, electric water heater $160 — $180 (In one property, I bought a small one that would accommodate the no more than, count ’em, «two» people that should have been living in the rental property.) Just remember, you don’t have to buy everything «new.» They know me well at the local junk and salvage yards in my area and I saved a bundle on things like doors and windows. Some stuff will need to be new, but buy salvage as much as you can.
Many sources of scrap metal — which make up one of the country’s largest exports — are far too often thrown out in the trash bin. Recycling metal reduces the amount of ore drilling throughout the world. What’s more, scrap metal, such as titanium, can be recycled for cash payments at a variety of local scrap yards across the country. Scrap yards collect most of their metal from the trade industry but welcome homeowners to recycle their scrap metal as well.
Both car enthusiasts and budget buyers have spurned the demand. So before you think of giving your dead beat car to a free car removal for scrapping it, consider this option of selling it to a car salvage company.
Remember, this was some years ago when there was a LOT MORE competition for scrap due to higher metal prices. Many of the larger refineries on each coast were sending their reps out as «professional buyers» — essentially just what I was doing in the film business. Obviously, it was an expensive proposition to have someone earning a salary and traveling full-time — the cost in overhead is tremendous. NOBODY can afford to hire people to do this today, so there is almost NO competition for this business.
A.M. My role as a project coordinator consists of bringing economic development back to communities where most of our urban community has lost hope for the future. My role also includes encouraging, uplifting, motivating, and giving each and every individual the attention that they need, and the self-worth that is required to be future leaders and role models.
Another important factor is age, which means the older the car is, the less is its value. Since the parts would be in better condition if the car is less than 10-15 years old, the salvage yard tends to pay more for these cars. However, there are some models that tend to have reliable parts even when the car is older. Your car does not need to have an excellent appearance for a salvage yard that offers cash for cars. What they look for is usable and salable parts. So if your body panel, engine or cabin components are still usable and fully functional, you might get a good price for your old and wrecked vehicle.
Need a special gift for someone inexpensively? Then cheap bargains are plenty at Garage or Yard Sales. But there are hidden costs or health concerns involving these sales. Certain sale items may be unsanitary, or just not good for you.
